Whether you are a fan of motorcycling or you engage in motocross, footwear is pretty important. It protects your feet, ankles and lower calves while you burn rubber on the road or on the track. There are four qualities you need to look for when you are searching for a new pair of motor sport boots.
A Solid Heel
Think of riding a motocross bike or motorcycle as though you were riding a horse. The heels of your boots keep your feet from slipping too far forward, thus preventing injury to your foot and ankle. Remember, when you are not on the bike, you are on the ground, and the heels of your boots are just as important for safety and stability on the ground as they are on your ride.
A Secure Shaft
In motocross, you want to have a nice, snug fit with buckles. On a motorcycle you will also want a secure boot shaft, but you can accomplish this with fewer buckles, more buckles, zippers or a stretch to fit shaft that fits like glove. If something were to happen to you, on the track or on the road, and your foot, calf or ankle was injured, the compressed snug fit of your boots would keep your lower leg and foot from bleeding out or from falling off entirely (if the accident was really severe).
Wherever you happen to ride, you will encounter some rough terrain and some wet, soggy terrain. Having a good, thick tread on your boots will help you stay on your bike and keep your feet from slipping, or help you push your motorcycle out of the mud when you get stuck. Off your ride, the thick tread gives you an advantage over snow and ice too (although you probably will not need to worry about this as a motocross rider, unless it is part of the race course outside).
Steel Toe Box
The shearing force of the ground beneath you when you put down your foot to regain control of your bike can take off a bit of the boot. If you are really out of control and cannot stop, putting your foot down to try and help could cause your ride to skid several feet before coming to a stop. When you understand the shearing force behind this decision, then you realize that you should have bought motor sport boots with steel toe boxes, if nothing other than to protect your toes.
Boots That Fit All of the Above and Then Some
Not many boot manufacturers make boots with all of the above in mind. If you do not mind paying a little more, you could invest in boots from companies like Gaerne Boots, which make some of the best boots for motocross and motorcycle riding. These companies also sell replacement parts for their boots, in case anything does happen to you and the boots while you are riding or competing. I wanted to find a fun way to spend more time outside. Since I spend most of the work week inside, I was hoping to find a fun way to get out in the sun on the weekends. That is why I went out and bought myself a motor scooter. Some of my friends giggled when I told them what I had bought, but after accessorizing it and taking it for a few rides, many of them have begun to understand why I love getting out on my scooter each weekend. Go to my blog to learn about scooter safety and to find some accessories that can make it look awesome!
